Switzerland → Tahiti: the ferry flight
The story
A Twin Otter is built to fly short distances into difficult places. Getting one to Tahiti means flying a very long distance into several difficult places, in the middle of a pandemic.
Our maintenance team prepared the aircraft at Altenrhein. The crew then flew it east across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and across the Pacific. There were 12 legs averaging eight hours each. The longest, from Oman to Sri Lanka, took 12 hours. Every border meant another Covid test.
Nineteen days after leaving Switzerland they landed in Tahiti with 82 hours in the logbook. The local crew greeted them by tossing them in the air.
